Laura Wilson has been sewing since the age of 9, launching a life-long love affair with textiles, construction and design. She majored in textiles and design in college and went on to a thrilling career in New York City as a Buyer for a “the largest store in the world” (yes, the one with the parade) and for a specialty store found in every mall. Traveling the world to create unique, special items that would appeal to her customers gave Laura a first-hand look into the marvelous world of textiles and expertise in construction of quality, lasting garments.
As a mom of four children, Laura's sewing skills comes in handy. Home-made Halloween costumes, prom dress alterations, costume director for school musicals were the norm in her household. Laura worked for a custom home-furnishing company where she designed window treatments, furniture, bedding for high end customers. She was the leading sales person with a strong following due to her ability to listen to the client’s needs and to create special, unique items for them.
Laura started her first quilt at 15 under the tutelage of her talented grandmother whose hand-sewn quilts were the envy of quilting guilds. Laura's first project was a Log Cabin quilt, all done by hand. Hand sewing and quilting was too slow moving for Laura who preferred the speedy whirl of the sewing machine.
Starting with her own children, then on to family and close friends, Laura created unique quilts from cherished items collected over the years. Her t-shirt quilts were coveted and admired. Eventually, Laura decided to quilt professionally. Uniquilts was born! Having excellent standards, thinking outside the box and hard, hard work has always served Laura well. It will serve you well too! That is our guarantee.
